AEO and AI Search

What Is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) and Is It Worth It?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. It is the practice of optimizing your business so that AI assistants like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Siri cite you when someone asks them a question in your industry. AEO is to AI search what SEO was to Google search in 2005: early, underutilized, and the source of outsized wins for whoever moves first.

How AEO is different from SEO

SEO optimizes for a list of 10 blue links. AEO optimizes to be the answer. Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT do not show 10 results. They show 1 to 3 specific recommendations, often with a citation link. If your business is not in the cited set, you might as well not exist for that query. The competition is smaller (because the result count is smaller), but the bar to qualify is higher.

What AI search engines actually look for

Five things consistently come up across LLM training and inference: structured data (LocalBusiness, FAQPage, Review schema), content that directly answers questions in plain language, mentions and citations across the open web (Reddit, niche forums, news sites), review sentiment and recency, and clear authoritative bylines and entity definitions. You cannot game these. You can only build them.

Is AEO worth your time in 2026?

Yes, if any of these apply: your customers research before buying, your competitors are not yet optimizing for AI, your business has authoritative niche expertise, or you sell to someone who uses ChatGPT or AI assistants daily. Google AI Overviews now appear in over 40 percent of local searches. ChatGPT has over 600 million weekly users. The window where AEO is cheap and competitive is now.

A starter AEO checklist

Add LocalBusiness schema with the most specific subtype. Add 5 to 10 FAQ questions with FAQPage schema on your top pages. Write content that answers specific questions clearly in 2 to 4 sentences (the format AI assistants extract). Get cited or mentioned in 2 or 3 niche forums or directories. Encourage detailed reviews (one sentence reviews give AI nothing to extract). Monitor whether you appear in ChatGPT and Perplexity for your top queries. Iterate.

Frequently asked questions

How is AEO different from GEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) and AEO are often used interchangeably. Both refer to optimizing for AI generated answers. AEO is the more common term in 2026.

Will AI search replace Google search?

Not entirely, but the share of queries handled by AI assistants is growing fast. Treating AEO as a separate channel rather than a replacement for SEO is the right framing.

How do I check if ChatGPT cites my business?

Ask ChatGPT (or Perplexity) the exact queries your customers use. Try variations. If your business does not appear in the cited results, you have an AEO gap.
