How to Use Google Business Profile Insights to Win Clients

Google Business Profile Insights (now called Performance) shows the business owner exactly how customers find their listing, what they search for, and what actions they take. Most owners glance at it once a month, see numbers they do not understand, and close the tab. For a service provider, those numbers are a sales weapon. Here is how to use them.

What Insights actually measures

Searches: how many people searched for the business directly (branded) and how many found it through category searches (discovery). Views: how many people saw the listing in Maps versus search. Actions: clicks to website, direction requests, phone calls, message requests, and Maps interactions. Each metric shows where the listing is winning or losing customers.

The 3 ratios that tell the real story

(1) Discovery to Direct ratio. If 85 percent of searches are direct (branded), the listing is not winning new customers, it is only being found by people who already know the business. (2) Views to Action ratio. If 1,000 views convert to 12 phone calls, the listing has weak conversion signals (poor photos, low rating, no offers). (3) Direction requests to Calls ratio. If direction requests are 5x calls, the listing is being used by drivers, not researchers, and the business is missing the higher intent searcher.

The pitch script that closes

"I pulled your last 28 days of GBP performance. You had 4,200 search views and 1,100 listing views. Of those, only 41 led to a phone call. That is a 0.97 percent conversion rate, which is about half what comparable businesses in your niche see. I can pinpoint the 3 changes (better photos, more reviews, and a service list) that should double that number inside 60 days. Worth 15 minutes?" Numbers from their own dashboard. Specific recommendation. Clear timeline.

How to access Insights as the business owner

Sign in to Google Business Profile (business.google.com). Click your listing. Click Performance. Filter by date range (default is 28 days, you can extend to 6 months). Each chart can be expanded for detail. Note that Google has reduced the depth of Insights data in 2024 to 2026 compared to earlier versions, so some metrics (call volume by day, photo views) require a workaround using third party tools.

Tools that supplement Insights

For richer data, layer in CallRail or Calltrackingmetrics for call attribution, BrightLocal for rank tracking, and Packleads for competitive scoring. Combining Insights with rank tracking and competitor scoring gives you a complete picture for any prospect.

Frequently asked questions

Can I access another business GBP Insights without ownership?

Not directly. Insights are private to the verified owner. You can show estimates using third party tools (BrightLocal, Whitespark, Packleads) and use them to make the same case.

How often does Google update Insights data?

Daily for most metrics. Some aggregated metrics update weekly.

Why did Google reduce the data shown in Insights?

Google has progressively reduced data granularity since 2023, citing user privacy and platform changes. Use third party tracking and scoring tools to fill the gaps.
